Discovering Me: Building Self-Awareness for Personal Growth

The database of lesson plans designed for teachers working with students aged 11-15 is available on the project website. The lesson plan entitled "Discovering Me: Building Self-Awareness for Personal Growth" aims to help lower secondary students understand and develop a deeper awareness of their own emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. Through interactive discussions, self-reflection activities, and roleplay scenarios, students explore how self-awareness influences personal growth, relationships, and decision-making. The lesson encourages students to identify their strengths and areas for improvement, recognize emotional triggers, and learn strategies for emotional regulation.

Training Activity in Siena

The Training course "Teaching and Emotional Intelligence at School" was organised by the University of Siena within the PoEmS project on 17-21 February 2025.
The 5-day course was attended by representatives of project's partners, namely the Magale Salestarrak (Urnieta, Spain), the Istituto Comprensivo Masaccio (Florence,Italy), Limbazi Vidusskola (Limbazi, Latvia), Fundatia EuroEd (Iasi, Romania), Darüşşafaka Schools (Istanbul, Turkey), for a total of around 16 participants, as well as by some representative of the University of Siena.

The database of lesson plans designed for teachers working with students aged 11-15 is available on the project website. The lesson plan entitled "My words: opening up or closing down?" is based on circle time. Students are invited to reflect on what are the characteristics of the meaningful relationships, on sentences and/or idioms of common use. The activity is divided into individual, pair and plenary phases and aims to improve communication skills.

The database of lesson plans designed for teachers working with students aged 11-15 is available on the project website. The lesson plan entitled "The Scientific Method by Galileo Galilei and the development of social and relational skills" is based on cooperative learning. Students learn content about the scientific method, interact with several classmates, experience different involvement within the group and improve their communicative skills.

How to become an emotionally competent teacher

The online training course is available on the project website. The fourth module focuses on how teachers can develop their capacity of emotional awareness and of management of students' emotions as a starting point for creating a safe and welcoming learning environment. The teacher, in fact, through the adoption of strategies and techniques can foster students' participation and emotional involvement towards the construction of a learning ecosystem where learners feel they can belong and grow.

How to develop the competence of students to understand what emotions are and how to understand emotional information and the causes of emotions

The online training course is available on the project website. The third module explores the topic of emotions, distinguishing them from states of mind. In addition, special attention is given to secondary and complex emotions as a product of social interactions and cultural differences. These differences need to be considered within educational and school contexts that are increasingly characterised by multi-ethnicity and multiculturalism, including through constructs such as cultural humility.

Third Partners' Meeting

The third partners' meeting of the POEMS project took place in Istanbul, Turkey, where all partners gathered to discuss the final assessment of the eLearning course, present proposed lesson plans, and define the planning for testing these lesson plans.

How to develop the competence of students to use emotions to facilitate critical thinking

The online training course is available on the project website. Different emotions have different effects on logical and cognitive processes. The second module focuses on the relationship between emotion and learning in order to enable teachers to identify activities best suited to students' emotions. Emotions are thus not only recognised, but become a means of relating and sharing experiences.

Perception of Emotion: Focused on the Ability to Perceive Emotions in Oneself and Others

The online training course is available on the project website. The first module focuses on emotions: from the reasons for their manifestation, to the different types, focusing on their facial, bodily and vocal manifestations. Particular attention is paid to the recognition of one's own and others' emotions, as a starting point for developing the ability to discriminate between real and apparent feelings.

The introductory module presents the construct of emotional intelligence, recognising it as one of the types of intelligence present in human beings. By describing what it is, what it is for, and why it is important in everyday life, this introductory module provides the basis for understanding the importance of developing and cultivating emotional intelligence in the new generation of learners and citizens.

It focuses on EI from a strictly knowledge-skill-attitude perspective, and is in no way intended to be a psychological-behavioral evaluation. The estimated duration to complete the test is 20-25 minutes. The third part is focused on their competences on the developments of students’ EI.

The POEMS project website is available on the Internet. The project website is the main tool to guarantee the dissemination of the project information and the sustainability of the project result. The project website is also an important support to the project management and facilitates partners' cooperation.

First Partners Meeting

The POEMS first partners' meeting took place online on 4 December 2023. Alessandra Viviani from the University of Siena (IT) welcomed all the project partners to the Zoom platform where the meeting took place. The European project partners introduced themselves as well as their project’s related experiences and expertise. The main activities to be carried out were presented and discussed, as well as the templates to be used. Alessandra Viviani from the University of Siena (IT) presented the draft version of the table of contents of the online training course.

The POEMS project is funded, by the European Commission through the Italian National Agency for the Erasmus+ Programmewith the aim to:

  • Foster the development of students and teachers emotional intelligence as a key competence that can contribute to enhance inclusion at lower secondary school level.
  • Support teachers in creating an educational environment in which students can develop their emotional intelligence skills to consolidate their key competences
  • Improve student capacity to develop their personal and interpersonal key competences based on emotional intelligence
